Web Hosts and how they partnered in 2008.

This was an interesting year for many web site hosting companies as the push to stay competitive drove some companies to look for partnerships. Some companies looked for ways to expand their marketing reach working with other brands to try to push for top positions within the affiliate directories around the internet. Other brands joined together to offer special discounts where 6 or more brands might be located within a web site that discussed web hosting coupons then those brands would launch an advertising campaign to try to drive traffic to that site, many times hurting their affiliates in the mean time.

Other partnerships included web hosts getting into markets they could not have before gotten into like vps, dedicated or managed server services. Sites like Site Ground partnered with dedicated and managed server companies like SingleHop were able to join together to use the existing traffic that Site Ground gets naturally in the Google search engine which they then formed the partnership with Single Hop to offer visitors something they did not which was a dedicated server line. These win-win partnerships started to grow throughout the web site hosting industry in 2008 and were only getting stronger as the economy tanking in Q4 showed more signs of necessity for these types of deals where they people who could get the traffic would try to monetize that traffic in any way that they could, even if that meant they had to give up a bigger piece of the profit margin just to get the deals done.

I expect that as the economy gets tighter and lending continues to be difficult in the early part of 2009 we should see continued growth for these partnership so that companies can utilize the stronger resources of another or to pool resources to effectively reach more customers and offer more services, even if those services are not their core competency or offered in house.
